Marsa Participation Regatta

Marsa has been participating in Malta National regatta racing since

1905 the club was well represented with a balanced committee and the Club participated in all the racing events apart from the Feilli event with 4 rowers.

Before this date Marsa took part only in the Tax Xoghol and in the Ferilli events in the beginning of the century for some reason only took part a small part in the events.

The first Dghajsa of Medals took part in 1905  Mill Imghallem Tony Z-Zigolon, This dghajsa was so well equipped and with the talent of our rowers everyone expected them to win this section and the rowers Nater Zammit, Spiru Mercieca, Salvu Baldacchino, and Gulju Greah was very disappointed after the race due to the result they expected to win this race and as a result they demolished the dghajsa when they come to port.

In the period of the first world war 1914-1918 all the races was suspended but as the war ended in 1918 the local support grew and was the front runner to push for the competition to resume again and after other districts supporting Marsa push to have the organized races to start as soon as possible a formal appeal was submitted and was immediately granted and Marsa took part of the Regatta but at this stage only took part in the Tax- Xoghol and Medallion also the Kajjaki with 4 rowers.

In 1920 Marsa build a new Dghajsa to accommodates 4 rowers with they names it LOUIS and in that year won he race the rowers that participated in this event was Joseph Mercieca, Salvu Azzopardi, Salvu Delona, and Wenzu Attard.

From 1912 to 1932 Marsa was going trough some unfortunate times but in 1932 won the race of Medalji but was not given the reward because this race was cancelled and on the 1930 Marsa was making good progress so much so that they we took the race of the Kajjiki with two rowers and in 1937 obtained another big race and a Palju with two rowers again .

But the reward again  was not presented because of some not given reasons so was the other boat of Birgu,  in 1935 Marsa won 3rd place and in 1939 it took second place in the same race of the rowers was given, The two rowers where Consiglo Abela and Guzi Deguara.

In the same year 1936 Marsa Won as well the second and third Palju for the race of Medalji 2 dghajjes that was registered to Michael Zammit L-ekwipagg for this dghajsa that come second was Michael Attard and Guzeppi Zahra, Tony Farrugia ,and Karmenu Azzopardi.

In 1937 the kajjik with 2 rowers of Marsa that won the first Palju was registered to Pietru Farrugia , it is fitting to mention the Marsin rowers that worked so hard to obtain these results for our district.  Natu Zammit, Spiru Mercieca, Salvu Baldacchino, Gulju Grech, Guzeppi Mercieca, Lorry Attard, Pawlu Zammit, Guzeppi Azzopardi, Michael Attard, Consiglio Abela, Guzeppi Deguara, Guzeppi Zahra, Tony Bugeja, Karmenu Azzopardi, Tony Camilleri, and his brother Karmenu Tal-Kukla and many others that their name died with them.

In 1951 whom the Regatta Competition Marsa was the first to join with Bormla, Isla, Marsamxett, and Rahal IL –Gdid.

From 1951 to 1954 won only 12 Palju but only on one occasion finished up first Position 9 times second, also these races was held at the Grand Harbour in Valletta.

When the Palju of the second position in the course tad dghajjes tal Medalji this district won in 1952 to 1953 Marsa also won two times in a row il Palju of the of the second course tad dghajjes tax Xoghol with 2 rowers when the Palju of the third position in the course in 1951 and in 1954.

Good to say as well there were 1951 as well as 1954 this district won the Palju for the second position of the course of tad dghajjes tax Xoghol with four rowers.

When in 1955 instead the Aggregated Cup became the Aggregate Shield and Marsa done its best to win this honor but had to wait till 1967 when this district won a clean sweep to win the Shield.

In this Regatta Marsa district by winning with 56 points first in 4 rowers and 2 rowers the participants for this honor was Salvu Zammit, Joseph Deguara, Joseph Fava, John Grima, Anglu Catania, Joseph Farrugia, Emmanuel Grima, Carmel Lia, Karmenu Farrugia, Tony Ellul, Karmenu u Tony Camileri.
